Test Description & Overview
Rheumatoid Factor (RF): Autoantibodies (predominantly IgM class) directed against the Fc region of human IgG molecules, serving as a classical serological biomarker for Rheumatoid Arthritis and systemic autoimmune Connective Tissue Diseases.
Negative: <15 IU/mL; Weakly Positive: 15 - 30 IU/mL; Strongly Positive: >30 IU/mL.
Elevated (High) Values
- Rheumatoid Arthritis (Positive in 70-80% of established RA cases)
- Sjögren's Syndrome, Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), Systemic Sclerosis
- Mixed Cryoglobulinemia, Subacute Bacterial Endocarditis, or Chronic Hepatitis C
Decreased (Low) Values
- Normal / Unremarkable Serology (Does not exclude Seronegative Rheumatoid Arthritis)
Clinical Alignment & Significance
RF positivity must be evaluated alongside clinical joint distribution and Anti-CCP serology; high-titer RF (>3 times upper limit of normal) confers 3 points in the 2010 ACR/EULAR Rheumatoid Arthritis classification criteria.
